Material Culture Studies
Technological systems form an integral part of the cultural system and play an active role in the formation and maintenance of social-cultural life. This is reflected in the choices people made out of the variety of technological and functional options they had at their disposal. Study of raw material selection, toolkits, reduction techniques, residue and use-wear analysis are carried out in the laboratories of this research section based at the University of Leiden. Their vision is to study material culture from a ‘biographical’ perspective in order to shed light on aspects largely invisible from the more traditional typo-morphologically oriented artefact studies.
