Developing a toolbox for geoarchaeology in archaeological field projects (3 days), 3 ects.

The theories and practices workshop will cover the development of a conceptual and practical toolbox for geoarchaeology in archaeological field and laboratory projects.  This includes understanding the nature of soils and sediments in archaeological contexts, field logging and mapping and thin section micromorphology training and analyses*

Day 1: Research problems, maps, stratigraphies and lacquer peels NW European and North Atlantic areas.
Day 2: Fieldwork in NW European area: Wekeromse Zand (Pleistocene) and Amstelveen (Holocene).
Day 3: Micromorphology North-Atlantic case studies.  Student presentations and synthesis.

*In this course students will have access to iPads4G assisting in accessing recording and presenting data.

Assignment: To build a presentation relating practical archaeological research problem to a toolbox in geoarchaeology methods.
