Archon Day 2019 – Professional ethics and community Archaeology

Date: 25 October 2019
Registration: Send an email to

Every year Archon organizes an Archon Day. During this day, we want to bring students, researchers, and professional archaeologists from the commercial sector together to talk about current topics in archaeology. This year the Archon Day will take place on 25 October 2019 and will revolve around two sessions themed ‘Professional Ethics’ and ‘Community Archaeology’.

The Archon Day will take place between 12:00 and 17:00 in the RCE in Amersfoort. The program consists of a lunch, a poster session, a general introduction to the Archon Day, parallel workshops ‘Community Archaeology’ and ‘Professional Ethics’ (twice in parallel between 13:30 and 15:00) and a concluding panel discussion.

Session Professional Ethics
During this session, we want to raise important questions about professional ethics in archaeology, such as; What are the guidelines on professional ethics in archaeology? Are there any protocols? How can / should we use data from other researchers? How should we quote the research of others? We also find it interesting to talk about ethics in the field and workplace, and what we should think about while working with cultural and genealogical descendants. Thus, professional ethics in its broadest sense. Dr. Gabriel Moshenska will give the workshop, starting with an introduction and proceeding with a number of statements or questions to initiate and lead the discussion.

Session Community Archaeology
The intention is to discuss archeology in the media and how (and to what extent) archaeologists should and can bring scientific research to the public. We would like to discuss how public reach can be used to obtain funding and how the local population / the public can be involved in scientific research. Prof. Henny Groenendijk will chair this session, starting with an introduction and proceeding with a number of statements or questions to initiate and lead the discussion.

Present your poster at Archon Day 2019: Professional Ethics an Community Archaeology.
