CAA Conference – 9 & 10 December 2021

CAA – Computer Applications & Quantitative Methods in Archaeology Conference

Date: 9 & 10 December 2020

Location: online

Credits: 1 ECT

CAA Netherlands/Flanders organise the 2021 chapter meeting online on December 9 & 10 2021.
With ever increasing ubiquity of digital tools and practices, and applications related to data science in archaeology, the organising committee is expecting a prolific event that critically focuses on the theory and practice of digital and quantitative methods in archaeology.

Programme:

The complete program and abstracts can be found here.

Workshop LiDAR – 16 & 17 June 2022

Workshop LiDAR

Date: 16 & 17 June 2022

Location: Leiden University, Faculty of Archaeology, room F0.06 (Thursday and Friday) and room F1.03 (Friday)

Credits: 1 ECT

Innovations in archaeological remote sensing are moving at a rapid pace, driven by the combination of powerful machine learning techniques, common use of UAVs (drones) with multiple sensors, and increasing availability of Open Source archaeological and environmental datasets. Knowing how to effectively manipulate remote sensing data and interpret them is, however, still challenging.

In this workshop you will learn about the state of the art in archaeological remote sensing, and get hands-on experience in working with the essential techniques needed for effective application. The approaches will be demonstrated by case studies from the Netherlands, Germany, and Cambodia.

Learning goals:

After this event, students will

  • have acquired up-to-date knowledge about the state of the art in archaeological prospection using LiDAR and Remote Sensing
  • have gotten hands-on experience in processing and visualization LiDAR data, and mapping archaeological features

N.B. Students are assumed to have basic skills in working with QGIS. If this is not the case, they should follow the Archon QGIS course in advance of this event.

Data Management for Archaeologists

Data Management for Archaeologists, part 1

Credits: 1 EC
Date: You can do the course online at your own pace.

About the course:

During this course,  you will learn the principles of database design, management, and analysis for archaeological data sets.

Program ‘working with databases’ (Jitte Waagen):

  • principles of database design
  • project data management
  • data analysis (querying, data mining)

IMPORTANT – software:

MS Access is proprietary software, part of the MS Office suite; cheap licenses can be obtained for Dutch students and university staff through Surfspot.
MS Access is not available for Mac; in order to use it on a Mac, you’ll have to set up a dual boot with Windows or use virtualisation software such as VirtualBox. Alternatively, you could work with LibreOffice, but this has limited functionality and a different interface.

The course can be found here on Youtube. The title is Relational Databases in MS Access. The course was developed for ARCHON by Jitte Waagen. The course consists of 4 videos.

We give students the possibility to follow the first part of this workshop (tutorial ‘Working with databases’) online. Anyone can take the course, but we can only award EC credits to ARCHON members.

To get the credits you need to take the database course from home and hand in a reflection report in which you discuss what you have learned in every module and send it to secretary@archonline.nl. Include screenshots of your work. Also, include how you would like to or could use databases in your own research.
