ARCHON EVENT FUNDING

Submitting Archon event proposals

Are you a staff member, PhD researcher or RMA student and are you considering organizing an event on your research topic? Did you know that Archon can help you organize and host such events?

Types of events

Events can be organized year-round and can take the form of workshops, conferences or masterclasses related to the ARCHON fields of study (check out the list in the menu bar). Subjects may include explorations into specific archaeological research themes, for example, matters of methodological interest, or conceptual discussions. Archon also encourages events that debate the societal impact of archaeological work in all parts of the world. The duration of events is normally 1 or 2 days, but other formats can be considered as well.

Broad topics and broad involvement

The two main criteria for proposal evaluation are:

1) A theme that is likely to attract a broad audience
2) The involvement of at least two of the participating Archon institutes.

If you have trouble finding an organising partner, you can contact the coordinator or a member of the Archon Steering Committee. We are happy to help you with finding a partner at any of the other institutes.

ARCHON will subsidize seminars or workshops related to PhD defense ceremonies on the following conditions:

  • The event will conform to general rules for event organization, as defined above
  • Additionally, ARCHON will not subsidize costs related the PhD defense ceremony itself that are normally covered by the university and/or PhD candidate, such as
    • Travel, subsistence and accommodation costs for PhD defense committee members
    • Celebratory lunches and/or dinners with the PhD defense committee members
  • When in doubt about this, please contact the ARCHON bureau for guidance

ARCHON support

We can help you with booking a venue at any of the participating institutes and can provide support with all other logistical matters concerning the event. If you have trouble finding a venue, please note that the Kinderdijkzaal at the RCE in Amersfoort can be used free of charge, and will hold up to 80 people.

As said, what we find most important is that you collaborate actively with someone from any of the other institutes in organizing the event. If this is challenging to you, we can help you with this through our Archon Steering Committee representatives.

Budget

The available budget is max. €1200 per event. Archon will support, for instance, the accommodation and travel costs of international speakers, and may also fund general costs.

Evaluation of the proposal

The ARCHON Steering Committee will review the proposals and decide on acceptance within four weeks after submission.

As mentioned, the main criteria are a broad subject and collaboration between two or more institutes. Furthermore, the Steering Committee only takes into account the proposals that meet the following requirements:

  • The proposal is submitted via our funding proposal form (all fields need to be filled out!)
  • The proposal contains an elaborate budget
  • The proposal contains a detailed program setup and list of (intended) speakers
  • Two or more institutions (affiliated to ARCHON) are working together on the organization.

Proposal submission

In order to submit a proposal, download the Standard form event proposals for an event proposal and fill it out. Here you can find a draft of the program structure.

You can send the proposals to either our coordinator or Archon’s scientific director, Dr. Philip Verhagen.
